Chapter Nineteen

Coming into the breakfast room, Elizabeth found only a few remaining at the large table: Mr. and Mrs. Gardner, Mr. Bennet, and Lydia. The younger Gardners had already dispersed to ready themselves for the various activities that would occupy their day. Scanning the remnants of Lydia’s plate was evidence her sister’s appetite was not lacking.

“Good morning, Lizzy,” her aunt welcomed her. “Did you sleep well?”

“I should say she did not,” Lydia inserted. “She tossed and turned all night!”

“Good morning,” Elizabeth greeted the group. “Did I? Well, that may explain why I do not feel as rested as usual.”

“Good morning, Lizzy,” her father smiled at her, though his eyes held a serious expression.

“Good morning, Lizzy. We were just discussing our plans for the day,” Mr. Gardner added. “It seems your sister has her heart set on doing some shopping.”

“I think I should get started since we are here,” Lydia explained. “Papa says he is unsure of how long we will remain in town. I thought I would just as well stay with my aunt until mamma comes, but apparently, I must make the trip back to Longbourn first.”

Elizabeth accepted the cup of tea offered to her and took a sip before replying. “I would not mind getting out to do a little shopping myself, seeing how it rained practically every day while Jane and I were here. What do you think, Aunt?”

“I have no objection to a day out with my nieces. Yes, I like the idea very much!”

The men exchanged glances. They trusted two of the women and silently agreed in favor of the scheme. Mr. Bennet said, “It is decided then. I have business to attend to with your uncle, so you may use my carriage for your outing.”

Lydia was all smiles. “I will run up and have Lottie help me with my hair if I am going to be a lady of fashion today,” she said excitedly, immediately quitting the room searching for the maid.

Mr. Bennet addresses the daughter sitting across from him, quietly asking, “How are you, Lizzy? I expect you got an earful from your sister after you left us last night. She is in a much more agreeable mood than we presumed we would find her in this morning. Where do we stand?”

“Papa, I had planned on addressing what we have learned of Mr. Wickham’s true character, as well as the impropriety of their eloping. I soon concluded I would be wasting my breath on any effort to change her opinion of the man. She thinks he is her knight in shining armor and is resolute in her belief that they will still marry. I was able to make some headway with her on the folly of eloping. Based on the little I came to know of how she separated from him, she expressed that Mr. Wickham had come to the same conclusion, wanting to preserve her reputation.”

Mr. Bennet gave her a look of incredulity. “We know better than to believe that!”

“I do not know much more.
